Have you ever been to Japan before? As you know, there are numerous beautiful site spots when you travel in Japan. Among these, “Hot spring(Onsen)” is the worth visiting.
Hot springs, or onsen, are popular all round but especially in the winter when they are a blessing for the body. Read on to see my selection of the best 3 onsen to check out in Japan during the cold season.
I’m Jay from Japan. I was in Australia in 2016 for working at public high school as a Japanese language teacher and got many friends from the all over the world. Every year, I welcome these friends and show around the site spots including Onsen in Japan many times. So I’m sure that I’m can recommend the best onsen that makes people from other countries excited and memorable.
１）Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata
Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata prefecture is most scenic in winter. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the breathtaking old town scenery with snow.
At Ginzan Onsen, you can stay at an onsen hotel or use a public bath. Some hotels make their hot springs available to the public as well. My recommendation is the “Ginzan Hot spring Fujiya Inn”.
This hotels is designed by a famous architecture “Kengo Kuma” who is well known for designing the National Stadium for Olympic 2020 and the state of the art station named Takanawa Gateway. Whichever way you choose, you are definitely in for a truly special experience.
２）Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto
Located in the center of Kyushu region, Kurokawa Onsen is a hot spring with over 300 years of history found in Kumamoto prefecture. There are so much nature and you can enjoy the spending time with relaxing mood.
Each Japanese style hotel, has different charming outdoor hot springs, which show you amazing mountain scenery and flowing streams. My recommend one is “Miyama-sannso”. The reason why I recommend this is that the gusts stay in independent guest-cottages. So you can enjoy your private time.
In addition, you can enjoy beautiful Japanese-sake at dinner time. You must like it and buy some for souvenirs.
Around this area, there are several hot springs that you can enjoy 3 hot springs by buying ticket named “Tegata”($6). Many kinds of onsen such as Cave hot spring make you excited.
Let’s go to Kurokawa Onsen, one of the popular hot springs in Japan, that is famous for soothing one’s body and mind.
３）Hottarakashi Onsen in Yamanashi
Hottarakashi Onsen has simple facilities that make you attractive. You can enjoy a popular spectacular outdoor bath. I recommend this to visit as a one-day trip.

There are two natural hot springs, “Acchi no yu” and “Kocchi no yu” in Hottarakashi Onsen.
The differences between the two is the spring quality, width, and opening hours, but the biggest attraction is that both can enjoy magnificent views of 700m altitude while visitors take the outdoor bath.
Japan is also suffering from the effects of the Coronavirus(COVID-19), so it’s not easy to travel as before now days. I hope things get back to normal soon, and explore the Japan!
